The cod fishing industry was vital to the economy of Newfoundland. Its history and growth is founded upon the European fisheries and fishermen who eventually settled on the island. Until recently, when moratoriums on cod fishing had to be placed to replenish the cod stocks, it could certainly be said that cod was Newfoundland's currency.
