Going on a Whale Watch

by Michelle and Chris Mock

This activity is similar to "Going on a Lion Hunt".  Use rhythm and big movements to recreate a whale watch outing.  These words represent the outing that the "big kids" in our school go on every year.  The Pre-K class was too young so we had our pretend whale watch.  The children copy everything the teacher says and does.  Use big movements for climbing on the bus, seeing lots of cars, trudging through sand, etc.  This is a great outdoor walking activity.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A bus
A big bus
A yellow bus
A school bus
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Let's ride on it.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
Cars
Lots of cars
It's rush hour
But they are not moving!
A traffic jam.
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Got to sit in it.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
Songs
Children singing
Whale songs
Blue, blue, blue whale  (to the tune of "Row, row, row your boat")
Biggest in the sea
You'd have to be over 100 feet long
To be bigger than he.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A beach
A long beach
A sandy beach
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Got to go through it.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
An ocean
A wide ocean
A deep ocean
A cold ocean
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Not going to swim it
Let's find a boat.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A pier
A long pier
A creaky pier
A squeaky pier
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Got to walk down it.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A boat
A big boat
A red and white boat
A Catalina Flyer
Can't go over it
Can't go under it
Let's get on it!
Row, row, row your boat
Gently down the stream
Ha, ha fooled you
I'm a submarine!

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A dolphin
Another dolphin
A pod of dolphin
Get a camera
It's a Kodak moment!

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
A tail
A big tail
That's not a tail
It's a fluke
Thar she blows
It's a gray whale
Gray whale, gray whale with baleen  (to the tune of "Twinkle Twinkle")
For four months you can be seen.

Going on a whale watch
We're not too young
Oh, look
Over there
What do I see?
The shore
A long shore
A sandy beach
Almost home (sigh)
Off the boat
Down the pier
Through the sand
Sit in a traffic jam
Take a nap
Wake up
We're back!!
