Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli discovered "canali" (channels) on Mars. Misinterpreted as "canals", many people saw such contructed grooves along the surface and deemed them to carry water for a Martian civilization. However, it is still debated what these forerunner astronomers saw, whether it was simply the brain having a need to connect points together or a mere desire for Mars to have such markings. We now know today that there are no such canals on Mars.
