Caption: The Alamo San Antonio, Texas - Originally a Spanish mission, this symbol of Texas independence dates back to 1718. The familiar "hump" on the church facade was added around 1850. In celebration of 100 years of Texas independence the Cenotaph was erected in honor of the Alamo defenders. The Long Barracks Museum was built from the convento remains and opened to the public in 1968. Photo by Steve Gibson © Terrell Creative
