The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (or "Mountie") is one of the most well-known symbols of Canada. However, Mounties don't usually wear this colorful red garb, as this is only used in ceremonial events. For the most part, a city dweller does not encounter Mounties very often, as cities have their own local police force. In towns and rural areas, the RCMP do law enforcement.
