What's New?

14 February 2008

The Imagiverse Fall Activities was a great success!  There was a Postcard Exchange, Hands Around the World and Weather Around the World project!  This spring, we are starting anew again.  You may join our projects by visiting: http://web.mac.com/imagiverse/, which hosts the activities.  At a later date, we will post all submissions to Imagiverse.ORG.

The U.S. portion of the Imagiverse Postcard Exchange is well under way.  Here is an update on what has been added to the Postcard pages so far:

ALABAMA - We received a darling hand made card from first grader Tatyana.  The card didn't exactly fit the current postcard pages so... you are going to like this... first, I used Tina Terry's card text and created a card by using an image off the BuyLocalAlabama.com web site.  The image fit the text and fit the look of our postcard pages.  I had received a newsletter from Imagiverse interviewee and writer Homer Hickam the very same day I received the card from Tatyana and class.  Homer is the former NASA engineer who wrote the book The Rocket Boys about his childhood.  That book became the movie October Sky.  If you haven't seen it, it's great!  Anyway... where does Homer live?  Well, Alabama, of course!  The coincidence was just too much so I wrote to Homer and Linda Hickam and asked for permission to post an excerpt from Homer's newsletter with Tatyana's card.  You can see the new Alabama page with Tatyana's drawing and Homer Hickam's text at: http://imagiverse.org/activities/countries/northamerica/alabama/

ARIZONA - Teresa Wilson's postcard gives the link of her website where she is posting all the cards she receives!

CALIFORNIA - Jeanette Becker sent two cards.  One shows the San Gabriel mission and the other shows the Huntington Library.  Kelly Byce sent a card from San Diego and Mrs. Hook's class sent a card showing the California State flower: the Golden Poppy.  There is a special addition to this section.  I found a card which shows a map of a portion of Southern California where I live.  I also found a selection of postcards from various cities in this area.  If you go to the map card, you will find a link to an entire new page with other Southern California cards.

FLORIDA - Jill Russ's class in Niceville sent in a card.  What a beautiful beach!

GEORGIA - Brittany from Soozi Borland's class wrote.

KENTUCKY - Amy Hurst and Crystal Hall sent cards from Kentucky.  Y'all be sure to check them out!

LOUISIANA - Crawdads anyone?  Dawn Meliet sent one our way!

MAINE - Bev Sirois sent a card with the state animal...  Check out the Maine State page written by Amos the Moose (they have some well educated moose in Maine)!!  Lynne Bean filled up the page with a variety of beautiful cards from Maine!  Makes one want to move there!

MISSISSIPPI - Christa Carson's Cuties sent a card of a beautiful mansion.

NORTH CAROLINA - Whoohoo!  Another state with at least one postcard thanks to Carol Brooks.

NORTH DAKOTA - Double Whoohoo!  Thanks to Donna Koch, North Dakota is also represented!

NEVADA - We are on a roll!  Nevada is now represented as well thanks to Christine Thomas.

NEW YORK - Beautiful view of the Adirondaks from Mrs. Buyce and Mrs. Rushinski and a watercolor painting of Gregory Museum by Cyril A. Lewis have been added to the cards that represent New York state.

OHIO - I had two for the price of one from Ohio.  When I got my card from Eileen Diamond, her card for Jeanette Becker was stuck to it.  Only mine had been processed….  So, I scanned both cards and then stuck the card for Jeanette back in the mail! :)  Carla Neely also created a beautiful computer generated card of the State bird.

PENNSYLVANIA - Heather Hennigan (aka the mysterious "Mrs. Black") sent a card.  Julie Bressler's Brownie Troop sent us a bunch to fill up the page!

SOUTH CAROLINA - Veronica Traywick and family sent a card.

TEXAS - Ilene Novy is the first to send from Texas this year.

VIRGINIA - Mrs. Fultz's Class wrote from Virginia.

AND FROM OVERSEAS...

Shaula Edskes shared The Netherlands with gorgeous postcards!  Susan Smales and family sent a card that had me searching all over the Internet for information...  On the card (which includes a recipe for Roman Lentil and Barley soup), there was a phrase in Latin: Tisanam Sic Facies ... we finally found out what it means: "Gruel thus made" or "Gruel, this is how you make it".  One of the ingredients was liquamen.  I found a site with instructions on how to make liquamen... don't try this at home...  "Take a bunch of smelly fish like sardines, cover them in salt and wait for them to liquefy."  Yummy!  If you don't have the stomach for that, you can substitute with Thai fish sauce.

During the summer of 2006 we have been busy revamping our Imagiverse Postcard pages.  After 3 years of participation in exchanging postcards with classrooms around the world, we had quite a collection.  We have now organized that collection for other classrooms to view.  In addition to the previously posted cards from the United States and Canada, we have added: China, France, Hong Kong, Germany, Malta, New Zealand, Philippines, Spain, Syria, Taiwan, Thailand, United Kingdom and Yugoslavia!  Enjoy your travels through the Imagiverse postcard pages!
