Glue and Sand

One team member has a cup of glue, which is poured and smeared over the papier mâché.  A second team member follows immediately with a cup of sand.  The sand is thickly sprinkled over the glue, covering to the edge of the board.  Once the sand set, the board is tilted over and excess sand is gently tapped off onto newspapers on the ground.

Teachers used their fingers to spread the glue, but a paintbrush works well, and students will not get their fingers as sticky.  The glue may be thinned with water to get a "paintable" consistency.
