There are many rumors about the Martian region of Cydonia.  Some people claim that they have seen a face in the region but some have even gone as far as to announce that there are pyramids, cherubim, sphinxes, and even a city built by angels on Mars!  The Viking Orbiter I took the first photo of the "face on Mars" on July 25, 1976.  NASA described the face as "an eroded mesa-like platform," and that, "the huge rock formation in the center, which resembles a human head, is formed by shadows giving the illusion of eyes, nose, and mouth."  The pictures look like a face in the morning but in the afternoon when great long shadows sweep across the red planet the face just looks like another rock formation.  While some still believe that a city built by angels was beachfront property before the oceans dried up, those people will have to wait until either Spirit or Opportunity or a human get there, but until then people will still develop theories.  One conspiracy theory is tying the U.S. to the Martian face and features.  An example is that people are seeing similarities between starfish, the Pentagon and a pentagonal-shaped mountain in Cydonia.  This connection is highly improbable but the questions remains: if someone from a distant planet really did build them, why, and where did they go?
