Did you ever find out why water disappeared so fast when left out in the sun?

ANSWER from Tim Karr on 22 May 2002:
Yes, eventually I discovered that the sun warmed the rock and the warmth of the rock caused the water to evaporate.

Did you ever get bitten by a crawly creature like a scorpion?

ANSWER from Tim Karr on 22 May 2002:
Fortunately no! I did get bitten by a wasp once, and ALMOST bitten by a Black Widow spider.

QUESTION:
What are drosophila?  What is a genus?

ANSWER from Tim Karr on 22 May 2002:
I can answer both of these questions as they are related: Drosophila is a genus of two-winged insects known as dipterans (di = two, pteran = wing).  This is a very large group that includes the common house fly and mosquitoes.  An excellent site (there are many!) to learn more about diptera can be found here -
